Columbus Day Weekend in the Sullivan County Catskills

It’s been raining since Sunday here in the Sullivan County Catskills, but the forecast calls for bright sun and 60s on Columbus Day Weekend. Mother nature’s been busy painting her fall portrait and there’s lots in store for leaf peepers this weekend inside and out. Kick off the weekend in Callicoon with an eclectic acoustic performance by 3 O’Clock Pot Luck at 7 pm at the Cafe Devine on Friday, Oct. 8. There’s another intimate performance in the Events Gallery at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, this one is Saturday, Oct 9 at 7 pm, featuring Rhett Miller, whose solo career captured attention with such subjects as fatherhood and love. You can taste some Italian Wines on Saturday at the Callicoon Wine Merchant from 2-5 and while you’re there you can check out William Landau’s opening exhibit “Letter.” There’s a pumpkin party too, this weekend in Callicoon for the kids at 3 pm and the Delaware Valley Depot. Fly Fishing more your fancy? The public is welcome to attend the Fly Fishing H all of Fame Dinner, Saturday at 3pm at Kings Catering Hall in Livingston Manor. Saturday at 5 pm at the Catskill Art Center in Livingston Manor you can see the premiere of “The Awakening.” And don’t forget about the season’s final Harvest Festival at Bethel Woods on Sunday from 11 am – 4pm.

Sullivan County is Still Sizzling!

With the passing of Labor Day weekend, the “unofficial” end of summer, the kids are back to school, the nights are getting cooler and the days are getting shorter but the Sullivan County is still sizzling with activity.

We look back on the summer and with the generosity of good weather on the part of mother nature, and the economy still making people watch their spending, the Sullivan County Catskills, in all of it’s wonder has experienced a growth in new attractions, and an increasingly steady flow of second home residents and visitor’s.  Even the local residents have taken notice of all that this area has to offer…right in their own back yards!   A tank of gas …or less,  depending on your vehicle…has brought visitor’s up to our beautiful Catskills in droves.  There has been something for everyone this summer.  From live concerts and theatrical performances to a drive up to admire the beautiful water falls and stop and stock up at the many farmers’ markets…people have been able to make more frequent visits.  There is so much to do that it is just impossible to do everything you want to do, or see everything you want to see in just one weekend!

Summer may be almost over, but the things to do and see…the farmers’ markets, the fall foliage, and the many new and existing shops and restaurants are still open and ready to welcome visitor’s to come to stay and play!  The Perfect Get

Kittatinny Canoes Pays it Forward!!

On July 19, 20 and 21 Kittatinny Canoes will be doing their 21st annual Delaware River Cleanup. They will cover 70 miles of the river from Ten Mile River access to the Delaware Water Gap on these days and on July 22 they will sort the trash for recycling and disposal.

They expect up to 100 volunteers each day and they provide them with breakfast, dinner and free camping in our campgrounds. Most of these volunteers come every year to the cleanup and they work very hard and do a great job.

It is very costly to accomplish this huge task and labor intensive to move the food to a different location each day, tents, tables and chairs, and move the canoes, volunteers and trash.

During the previous 20 years of doing this cleanup they have removed 7814 tires, 8186 pounds of aluminum cans and a total of 385.67 tons of trash. This is their way of giving back to this great resource, the Delaware River.

THIRD ANNUAL “CATSKILL IMPRESSIONS” EXHIBIT AT CAG – July 3rd OPENING!

The  Catskill Artists Gallery, 38 South Main Street in Liberty, NY, announces its third annual unjuried show designed to represent the Catskill area in all its beauty, character and quirkiness.  The exhibit will open on Saturday, July 3, 2010 with a gala reception including food, drink, and artists on hand, and will continue through Sunday, August 15.

July 3 is also the last chance to bid on the Silent Auction works – at 8 p.m. sharp, the winning bidders will be announced!  See the gallery’s Facebook page for photos of the original donated art – including an oil painting, sculpture, jewelry, glass checker set, wall hanging, vase, photographs, pottery, etc.

The gallery’s first Gourmet Bake Sale will also be taking place on July 3 – take home fancy treats for the whole family!

It’s not too late for artists to submit work to the show — up to five pieces of work in any medium.  Each piece should be ready to hang or otherwise display.  There is a $20 non-refundable fee for submission of work.  The pieces can be for sale, or not; if they are sold, there will be a 30% commission to the gallery.  Download an application from www.catskillartistsgallery.com – or call 845-292-0310.
